Conkeror does allow this kind of customization, yes. The extension language for it is Javascript instead of Elisp, however.

it drives me nuts to find that when i leave emacs i have to abandon all my customized key bindings [like (global-set-key "\eh" 'backward-delete-char)];

can conkeror, or shall conkeror ever, allow this kind of customization?

> The first is that by default, the open-url does not have history

I'll admit the defaults are bad, but a simple "url_completion_use_history = true;" fixes this.

I think the delay is meant to help with typos. It happens every so often that I'll hit the wrong number, notice that it highlighted the one I didn't mean, so I hit backspace quickly and fix it. If I notice it's right, I just hit RET. In fact, as long as it highlights the one I want, I can hit RET before I've typed enough to uniquely identify the link.

The C-x 3 problem is very difficult to solve with Gecko's infrastructure; it assumes that a page will only be visible in one container, so it's impossible to emulate Emacs in this regard. It's easier to just use a good window manager to perform the splits for you.
